Resident Dick Grushon is Enjoying his Carefree Lifestyle at Pinebrook

Moving to the right retirement community makes room for more important things.

“Plan ahead, if you can bring yourself to the realization, and not wait until you have to. The sooner you start, the easier the move and transition will become.” – Dick Grushon, resident of Pinebrook

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. Dick courted Sally at Miami University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1956 and a Master’s degree in 1958. They married and raised three daughters in Kalamazoo, where Dick worked as an educator and administrator. In their desire to leave the Michigan winters behind, their hearts took them back to Oxford, Ohio. Just shy of their 50th anniversary, an inoperable brain tumor took Sally in her sleep. Two springs ago, Dick decided it was time for a change and moved to Pinebrook. “When I was in my home, I was having to mow the lawn, trim the bushes, weed the flowerbeds, shovel the snow, do repairs around the house, cleaning the house, doing the laundry, doing the shopping, the food, cooking and cleaning up the kitchen afterward. I wasn’t a good cook.” – Dick Grushon

The longer you live, the more you appreciate life’s simple pleasures. Friends, family, a good laugh and a good shoulder to cry on become more valuable than a big house filled with material items. How many good card games will pass you by before you realize you’re not even at the table? Your best life doesn’t just happen, you have to choose it. The right retirement community connects you with every opportunity. “As you get older, you begin to cherish the free time that you have more and more and so it’s just a relaxing pace, much more relaxed…. There is a wide variety of things to do and trips to go on. They frequently take trips to different museums and events around town which is always interesting.” – Dick Grushon

A lifelong Reds fan, Dick cheers on Cincinnati, win, lose or draw. In fact, watching all the professional, college and youth sports his heart desires is a cherished freedom in his new lifestyle. When the home team is away, you can bet Dick is watching on the big screen with his Pinebrook pals. “Every time there’s a big sporting event we go down to the movie room where they carry it on the big screen TV and there’s a lot of joking around and hooting and hollering and cheering for your team and booing the other team. It’s just that friendship kind of thing, you know.” – Dick Grushon

Dick visited multiple communities before deciding on Pinebrook. “Pinebrook just seemed to fit the bill for me. It had everything that I wanted and it seemed like – and it is – a very pleasant place to live. I have a lot of company. When I want company I go down to the lobby or the activities. If I want privacy I just stay in my room and do whatever it is I want to do by myself.” – Dick Grushon
